Summer Treats

July 30, 2014

Wow the summer has truly arrived! Barbecues and picnic blankets have been dug out from the back of the cupboard and my shorts have become my go-to wardrobe item every morning!

I absolutely love the change that comes with the British summer – suddenly everyone is outside and smiling, and the general atmosphere is one of relaxed, happy vibes. I know we Brits are known for moaning about the weather, but on the flip side, I don’t think any one can say we don’t make the most of it when the sun does shine!

With all these summer vibes, I’ve been getting creative with some new lines of charm necklaces to evoke that sunshine feeling whatever the weather. My retro Ice Lolly charms on silver plated chains are fun little pendants that will remind you of childhood holidays and sticky fingers 😉

All lollies jumbled

Want to re-live those carefree times, but with a grown up twist?! Why not try making these refreshing and delicious looking Pimms Ice Lollies:

Perfect for all those barbecues and picnics!

I’ve been working on all sorts of new ideas so will be sharing them with you bit by bit, in the mean time, you can check out what else I’ve been making in my Etsy shop 🙂

Fingers crossed for more of this gorgeous weather….enjoy!

New creations for sale!

June 20, 2014

I’ve finally got there! With the summer upon us I have begun to get some of my new laser cut jewellery up for sale in my Etsy shop….hurrah!

It’s been a long time coming, and at times very frustrating trying to find a new working process, but with some perseverance I’ve got a product I am far happier with.

Having confidence and pride in what you sell is so important – without it how could you ever recommend it to your customers? I had got to the point where I felt that the shrink plastic I was using wasn’t high enough quality for what I wanted, which was why I decided to make changes. I’m really pleased with the results, and am looking forward to getting it out to my stockists!

In the mean time, snap some up for that summer vibe before anyone else! I haven’t taken my parakeet necklace off since I made it!!

Each piece is lasercut from 3mm wood sheet and then hand finished with doming resin to give it a beautiful glossy depth. The illustrations and designs are still all my own, digitally printed onto archival paper and applied to the wood sheets to transform them into jewellery.

Each piece is finished with silver or gold plated chain and findings to maintain the quality feel. It’s also great if you have sensitive skin that can’t tolerate fashion metals 🙂

Hope you like, loads more coming soon!

Laser cutting, Resin and Cards

June 9, 2014

Hello! Today I am working in our Co-Op shop Paper Plane, so it’s the perfect opportunity to be getting on with some admin and writing my blog.

I’ve been continuing work on my new laser cut jewellery, and (touch wood – no pun intended) might actually have some pieces to start selling soon! I haven’t decided where I’m getting the laser cutting done in the long run, but I do have quite a lot of stock from my trials so far, so I can at least get that made up whilst I finalise my production.

The next stage of each piece is the resin top coat which I’m applying by hand once I have the laser cut shapes. I really like the depth and lovely domed finish it adds so I was pretty excited with how these came out! (Please excuse the scruffy studio tabletop!).

I was also thrilled to receive these samples through the post of my new greeting cards from The Imaging Centre 🙂 I’m now just waiting for my first order to be delivered. There are 10 designs in total, all of which will be available first at our lovely Paper Plane!

Next up is the Easton Arts Trail this weekend so do pop in and say hi at Garage Studios if you’re in the area!

New Processes

May 23, 2014

Now the excitement of our new Co-Op Shop – Paper Plane – has died down, it’s back to work.

I may have mentioned that I have been looking into some new working processes and materials for my jewellery. I may have suggested they would be ready in a month or two. How wrong I was!

Without boring you with the details, finding companies and processes to reproduce intricate cut out shapes of images is a lot harder than you’d imagine in this day and age of technology.

Having spent a long time looking into ceramic and metal processes with little success I have settled on wood as my material of choice, but am still working on the best way of applying the image.

For the moment though I’ve got a first trial batch, which hopefully will be going on sale once they’ve had their resin layer applied 🙂

Watch this space for news of their release!!

New Artist Co-Op Shop!

April 3, 2014

I have some pretty exciting news about a new venture and project for 2014…..myBearHands is now part of an Artist Co-Operative and we’re opening a shop!

We’ve kept it under our hats until we’d signed the lease and got the keys, (don’t want to tempt fate!) but now it’s all finalised I can safely say that we’ll be opening in about a months time .

The shop is situated on the top stretch of Gloucester Road in Bristol, and there are 7 of us working together to bring the idea to life.  I couldn’t ask to be sharing it with lovelier people … who are, in no particular order – Alice Rolfe of Rolfe & Wills, Bethan Buss of Boodle Boutique, Alice Shields, Susie Hampshire, Ruth Broadway of Ruby and the Paper Parade, and Tiphaine Lecrivain.

And the name I hear you ask?….will be ‘PAPER  PLANE‘  🙂

We picked up the keys on Tuesday, and have spent a couple of days sanding, painting and generally getting down and DIY….there’s still a long way to go but it’s looking a lot better for it!

A blank canvas…..

….and fizzy to celebrate!…

….a spot of painting over that ‘lovely’ green colour…..

….and voila!  Crisp clean walls to be proud of!

Next to go will be that equally delightful carpet, before we can start thinking about building shop fittings and planning our display.  And of course, being full time makers we will all be running our usual businesses alongside.  Phew!  A busy and fun filled month to come methinks 😉

There will be plenty of updates and pics to come as we progress so if you’re not already following myBearHands on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, just follow the links to be kept in the loop!

Until next time  x

Jungle Jewellery

March 10, 2014

With Spring just around the corner, the season of new beginnings, I have some fresh offerings of my own.  My Jungle range is now available to buy in my Etsy shop!  I’ve not quite got them all up, but have made a good start and will hopefully be done by the end of the week.

It does feels fitting that they are going up as the sun (finally!) makes an appearance in the British skies.  After months of rain a bit of sunshine and colour are just what the doctor ordered I reckon 🙂

I hope this is good news for those of you who have been in touch since the Bath Christmas Market asking about them….Apologies it has taken so long!

A Polar Bear is for life not just for Christmas

March 5, 2014

New work on sale my Etsy shop finally!  You can now get your hands on my Arctic Animal brooches, which were rather popular over Christmas, and next up will be my ‘Jungle’ range….just got to take some quick pics…

These are 3 of the 6 designs available:

Head to my shop to see these plus Mr Polar bear, Penguin and Arctic Fox.

Each one is (of course) my own illustration, then digitally printed onto shrink plastic, hand cut, baked, varnished and finished with silver plated findings.  With their jiggly legs moving freely when you wear them, these little brooches will always make you smile 🙂

Hope you like!
